UPSC CSE SYLLABUS

Civil Services Examination (CSE) is one of the most popular exams conducted by UPSC. It is widely known as the ‘IAS exam’ even though CSE is a common exam to recruit candidates to about 24 top government services like IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS, etc.

UPSC Civil Services Exam (CSE) consists of 3 stages. The stages are:

  1. Preliminary Exam (objective)
  2. Main Exam (written)
  3. Interview (personality test)

PRELIMINARY EXAM SYLLABUS

PRELIMS has two papers:

  1. GS PAPER I
  • Current event of National and International importance
  • History of India and INM
  • Indian and World Geography- Physical, social, economic, the geography of India and the world
  • Indian Polity and Governance- Constitution, Political system, Panchayati Raj, Public policy, Rights Issues, etc.
  • Economic and Social development- sustainable development, poverty, inclusion, demographics, social sector initiatives
  • General issues on environmental ecology, biodiversity, and climate change that do not require subject specialization
  • General Science

2. CSAT PAPER II

  • Comprehension
  • Interpersonal skills including communication skills
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability
  • Decision making and problem-solving
  • General mental ability
  • Basic numeracy ( numbers and their relation, orders of magnitude) {class X level}
  • Data interpretation ( charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency, etc) {class X level}

MAINS EXAM SYLLABUS

Mains has 9 papers:

  1. Two qualifying paper: a) Any Indian Language b) English Language Paper
  2. Essay
  3. GS I
  4. GS II
  5. GS III
  6. GS IV
  7. Optional Paper I and II

Structure of the English Language Paper:

  • Essay (100 marks)
  • Comprehension (60 marks)
  • Precis (60 marks)
  • Translation (English to Hindi and vice-versa) (40 marks)
  • Grammar (40 marks)

ESSAY:

  • Mainly current affairs related topic or some important issues.

  • Indian heritage and Culture
  • History and Geography of the world and Society
